These cap irons are modeled on the old Record design, and are a major improvment to any Bailey pattern plane. They are thicker than standard cap irons, which lends more mass and chatter resistance to the blade/iron pair. They are also very convenient for sharpening as the cap iron remains screwed to the blade during honing-just the bottom part is snapped off and then replaced when honing complete.
NOTE: there is normally a little pin in the top part to index the two pieces. It is missing. a small (2mm approx) pin can be fabricated and installed to rectify this, or it can be used as is with no problem. Also, this item has a few toolbox scratches...it is very good but not new.
