Religious Doc & Sternhold Hopkins Psalms [1500s]](http://historylesson.homestead.com/files/rel.jpg) | | For More Details: Click here | A couple of religious items I found among a group of early documents that someone had set aside among the papers. The small vellum leaf has handpenned Latin writing and includes manuscript notations at the top (see scans). The small paper that says "Amerigo Dell'Antella 1360" was found with it. I don't know if they are related (if so, maybe this identifies the writing as going back to 1360 and who owned it or penned it). Also included is a group of Psalm leafs from a Thomas Sternhold and John Hopkins version of Psalmes. Sternhold first printed his Psalmes in the 1500s, and they were so popular that later editions were published. I am not knowledgeable in Psalmes, but given the James V reference on the title page, I presume this was one of the earlier versions. James V (1513-42) was King of Scotland and the father of Mary, Queen of Scots. These leaves also include Psalme I (Psalmes of David) which was widespread in Anglican usage before the English Civil War (1628 printing). The armies sang this version before going into battle. This also includes a sheet of printed music (front and back). Sternhold died in 1549 and was Groom of Robes to Henry VIII and his son, Edward VI. These psalms belonged to a man named Nathaniel Standley. He has written "Nathaniel Standley His Book 1728" on the front right page margin, and also adds his name to the bottom of the page. A Nathaniel Standley lived in Connecticut and emigrated to Massachusetts in 1659. By 1683 he was an Ensign in the Militia (presumably fought in the King Phillips War with the Indians). I suspect the Nathaniel Standley who owned this book was the son or grandson of Ensign Standley. The vellum leaf is in good condition. The Psalmes are in ragged condition, a couple of tears, stains (see scans). Buyer pays $2.50 shipping in the U.S. I do NOT take PayPal.
